My Turn Your Turn, the seventh CD from award-winning singer-songwriter, Cathy Bollinger sparkles with thoroughly singable songs that gently address the needs of children who find social interaction confusing or challenging. Using descriptive, social story-like phrases to talk about concrete situations, My Turn Your Turn sings children through the tricky territory of engaging with others. Songs touch on empathy, asking for help, handling anger, and other daily social skills. With music that makes lessons fun to learn, Bollinger, a trained music therapist, breaks common everyday interactions down into simpler and more understandable activities. Who ever said children’s music had to just be for kids? Parents will love the effect of good manners mixed with terrific music.

We are most excited to share with you our great NEWS. For 2 years, we have been working with Mayer Johnson to produce a companion book to our best selling CD, MY TURN YOUR TURN: Songs for Building Social Skills.

The CD has taken the world by storm and has been acclaimed by groups and individuals, like Tony Attwood and Carol Gray that support people and families affected by Autism, Developmental Disabilities, Down Syndrome, and other challenges to learning using more traditional approaches.

And now, we would like to introduce the book to you. The purpose of the book is to provide teachers, parents and therapists a practical guide to accompany the musical compilation of MY TURN YOUR TURN: Songs for Building Social Skills. These great supporters of our music have been asking us for visual support, activity ideas, guitar chords and Boardmaker © pages, which will increase the accessibility to many children.

Social interactions can be challenging to children, especially those with Developmental Disabilities, Autism and Down Syndrome. Music provides a safe, predictable and satisfying way for children to practice these skills.

In our new book, you will find several new and helpful components:

  • Song Lyrics
  • Song Lyrics with Guitar Chords
  • Small Picture Communication Symbols, corresponding to the songs in their entirety
  • Large Picture Communication Symbols, reflecting the main points of each song
  • Activity ideas, gathered with the help of teachers, therapists and parents from around the world

My Review

It has fourteen songs that reinforce necessary and often lacking social skills such as saying ‘hello’ when you meet someone; taking turns; saying “excuse me” to get people’s attention; and making eye contact. Which is extremely helpful when a child or adult has special needs and doesn’t understand the common social skills. Inside the cd holder there is tips for parents and teachers to help when trying to teach new message. I like the songs and it had a variety of different instruments include guitars, drums, ukulele, fiddle, harmonica, bass, flute, trumpets, piano, clarinet, piccolo, mandolin, recorder, sax, trombone, keyboard, and timbamallet. Bollinger employs several musical styles: folk, jazz, country, rock, Latin, and Hawaiian. Which makes it fun to listen to along a message being said in the song.
